abstract = {The paper focuses on bidding selection mechanisms based both on offer price and electricity-quantity strategies. The aim of the paper is to present a procedure that allows the use of both game theory and of detailed cost-based unit-commitment computer codes. The procedure is conceived in a way to be as much as possible independent of the specific market rules. The results of a preliminary analysis are shown, concerning simple test cases that incorporate some distinctive characteristics of electricity markets and power plants.},

abstract = {Distributed generation (DG) poses new challenges in distribution network development and operation. Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) will face more active management of networks, new commercial arrangements, and new challenges in asset management. Resolving these will require new types of analysis that were previously unnecessary or very rare. Collecting and processing information to facilitate these analyses presents a significant new burden for DNOs. However, methods are available that may assist DNOs in the collection of information. Three such methods are discussed here: a structured approach to fundamental information requirements; standard formats; and generic device types or category descriptions. Examples are provided of how DNOs would use the information collected to analyse DG connection and operation. Effective management of information will enable DNOs to characterise DG and perform the analyses necessary to ensure that a reliable and high-quality electricity supply is maintained.},

abstract = {In the last decade many countries have gone through liberalisation of their electricity industries. In many instances this has seen a move towards increased competition with market forces left to determine price. The resultant changes to market structure affect both electricity market participation and the operation of the power systems requiring a whole range of new issues to be addressed. This paper proposes an electricity market oriented tool that creates bidding strategies in a competitive market environment by combining fuzzy logic and deterministic approaches. In this way the technical, economic and behavioural decision making process of a generation based market participant is considered. The proposed model can be accommodated by both a power exchange and a balancing market The results obtained for different types of plants have been compared with actual market results for a representative combined cycle gas turbine plant (CCGT).},

abstract = {This paper presents the analysis carried out for designing and developing a prototype expert system capable of managing the electrical system of an industrial plant. The electric network of the plant, including significant gas turbine and steam turbine generation facilities, is presented. The modeling phase of the system for successive analysis by simulation using a commercial power system code is also reported. The load-shedding problem is then considered and the related engineering aspects are briefly recalled. The guidelines for the realization of a load-shedding scheme for industrial electrical plants based also on advanced artificial intelligence tools such as expert systems are proposed. The expert system is used online to prepare lookup load-shedding tables capable of accounting for actual process conditions. Offline validation of the proposed shedding is then operated by static and/or dynamic simulation. The use of a prototype rule-based expert system is expected to permit the achievement of a better flexibility in the realization of load-shedding schemes for improving the process continuity and management},

abstract = {In the context of power system restructuring, the maintaining of adequate levels of security and reliability will be operated also through direct load control, thus considering load as the potential provider of ancillary services such as regulation, load-following, frequency responsive spinning reserve. In any case load-shedding still remains the ultimate resource for emergency conditions. In the paper several load-shedding schemes for underfrequency operation are examined. Both traditional schemes, based only on frequency thresholds, and adaptive schemes, based on frequency and on its rate of change, are considered. An IEEE test system for reliability analysis is used to compare the behavior of the proposed schemes when selecting different thresholds and percentages of load to be disconnected. Results are reported into detail and considerations on possible advantages and drawbacks also related to the framework provided by the electricity market are presented},

abstract = {The tendency in the industrialized countries to significantly improve the contribution of distributed generation in the existing electrical networks poses new technical and economical challenges to power system control and management. Coordination of distributed resources for the control of active power is addressed in this paper. The models of two typical distributed electrical sources-a photovoltaic array (PV) and a diesel-driven generation plant (DPP)-are first individually derived and examined. Successively these models have been adapted in view of their reciprocal integration into an existing distribution network. A coordinated management of the two distributed sources is suggested in order to fully exploit the PV renewable energy from the Sun. A suitable regulator is derived from secondary control structures typical of large electrical systems by using a power signal exchanged between the two sources. Other possible consequences of this approach are presented with reference to a competitive electric market},
