abstract = {Summary form only given: The paper proposes a detailed model of a gas turbine for a CHP (Combined Heat and Power) plant. The prime mover is endowed with several controls: first of all, a speed control which can be either droop type or isochronous type according to the status of connection to the distribution grid. An acceleration limiter and an exhaust gases temperature limiter intervene to cut the fuel request respectively in case of an excessive rotor acceleration and of a too high temperature of the exhaust gases. A further control regulates IGV (Inlet Guide Vanes) in order to keep the exhaust temperature almost constant. This is important in a cogeneration plant where the heat recovery from the exhaust gases is used to satisfy the demand of the thermal load. Some validation simulations on a model of cogeneration plant connected to a MV distribution grid are carried out and commented.},

abstract = {Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) techniques are raising more and more interest in the context of the operation of high voltage transmission networks because they represent a new approach to the security assessment in power system operation. The classical deterministic methods, which compare the power system performance to a predefined set of requirements (e.g. no current and voltage violations, no stability problems), do not take into account the probability of occurrence and the magnitude of events and do not perform a quantitative characterization of the impact of the contingencies. The fulfillment of the security requirements also for the most critical contingencies determines large security margins, thus higher operational and planning costs. On the other hand the risk of other contingencies may be underestimated. The paper starts by illustrating a methodology to assess the risk of loss of load caused by conventional (N-1) or multiple dependent contingencies resulting into a cascading process. A control strategy is then introduced, aimed to reduce operational risk by optimal preventive redispatching of conventional generators. Simulation results of the application of the approach to an IEEE test system and to a model of the Italian EHV transmission grid are illustrated and discussed.},

abstract = {The aim of this paper is to describe two regulators for a wind turbine equipped with a synchronous generator and a full converter for the interconnection to the grid. The idea is to extract a temporary amount of power from the wind turbine in order to provide short-term frequency support. The wind turbine model presented is specifically designed to analyse effects of wind generation on the electric grid. The first proposed regulator works to decelerate the rotor and hence transferring part of its kinetic energy to the electric grid: this can be done with variable speed wind turbines because the presence of electronic converters decouples the rotational speed of the turbine rotor from the grid frequency. The second proposed regulator acts on the pitch angle of the blades. Normally wind generators work at maximum efficiency: in this case a reserve of power is obtained working at a degraded point in the aerodynamic characteristic and it can be injected into the grid by pitching the blade. The simulation for testing the behaviour of the two regulators is performed in Matlab-Simulink using the Phasor simulation mode of SimPowerSystems.},

abstract = {The paper describes a joint university-industry project aimed at defining hardware and software requirements for the development of a prototypical microgrid platform on existing sites able to manage generation resources and load. The paper describes an architecture developed for integrating existing software tools for on-line load monitoring and control and for management of in-site generation. The system acquires data from field and stores information on a server, from which an optimization tool gets data in order to perform its calculations and give the optimal set points to the programmable generation resources. Results are reported about experimentation at test sites with different generating units, such as cogeneration of heat and power (CHP) and/or renewable power generating units equipped with a real-time monitoring tool.},

abstract = {The latest distribution management systems tend to incorporate optimization functions for the short-term scheduling of the various energy and control resources available in the network (e.g., embedded generators, reactive power compensators and transformers equipped with on-load tap changers). The short-term scheduling procedure adopted in the paper is composed by two stages: a day-ahead scheduler for the optimization of distributed resources production during the following day, an intra-day scheduler that every 15 minutes adjusts the scheduling in order to take into account the operation requirements and constraints of the distribution network. The intra-day scheduler solves a non-linear multi-objective optimization problem by iteratively applying a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) algorithm. The linearization of the optimization function and the constraints is achieved by the use of sensitivity coefficients obtained from the results of a three-phase power flow calculation. The paper shows the application of the proposed approach to a medium-voltage 120 buses network with 10 dispatchable generators and 2 transformers equipped with on-load tap changers.},

abstract = {The liberalization of the electricity markets causes power systems to work closer and closer to their limits. The online assessment of system security becomes a topic of paramount importance in control centers. In this context fast indices to quickly assess system security are fundamental in an on-line DSA session. This paper considers three voltage stability indices recently proposed in literature and carries out some comparisons. In the first part the authors briefly describe the theoretical background of each index. The second part is devoted to two comparisons: at first, the three indices are compared by using an IEEE test system. Secondly, the FVSI (Fast Voltage Stability Index) and the VCI (Voltage Collapse Index) are compared by adopting a model of the Italian HV transmission grid. The comparisons will show the peculiar information provided by each of the considered indices and will assess the performance of these indices also on a realistic power system. Final remarks are reported and discussed.},

abstract = {The increase of DG penetration in the distribution networks makes more and more interesting the investigation of security issues which are typical of the large transmission grids (transient stability, voltage stability and small signal stability) as well as the study of the DG responses to load changes in the grid. This paper presents the model of a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) dedicated to perform dynamic simulations on MV distribution networks. In particular in the present paper transient stability and load following issues are tackled. The first part of the paper is aimed at describing the model of the SOFC which is then used in the test system. As also a gas turbine is inserted into the test system, a brief look at the gas turbine model is mandatory. The aforementioned models include both the slow dynamics (GT prime mover, electrochemical system time constants for SOFC) necessary to study the DG response to load variations and the fast dynamics (e.g the power converter control and protection systems for SOFCs) necessary to study the transient stability related issues. The results of the analysis (carried out on a test MV distribution network) are reported and some conclusions are drawn.},

abstract = {The paper is aimed at focusing the influence and more in general benefits and problems that medium size wind turbines, photovoltaic power plants, and small cogenerative generators embedded in a radial distribution network can produce regarding voltage profiles and power balance. In particular the novel capability of wind turbines to reduce active power in case of over-frequency is analyzed. This feature in fact is found to be quite important in reducing frequency deviation in case of high penetration of wind turbines during severe islanding conditions. The production profiles of each generator are detailed in function of their variability. So wind turbine outputs are detailed with a time scale of 15 minutes while combustion engine outputs every 60 minutes. The possibility of congestions or voltage peaks is studied by steady state simulations, performed by a widely used power system analysis code, in a temporal window of ten days. Different simulations scenario are analyzed with the presence or less of embedded generation and with as well as without the capability of generator to regulate reactive power.},

abstract = {The paper deals with a microgrid test facility, settled at the CESI RICERCA laboratories, equipped with various distributed energy resources (DERs) and connected to a LV network. The operation of such a microgrid is supervised by a central automatic microgrid management system (MMS). The paper first reports and discusses some experimental results carried out for the assessment of DERs performance and for the implementation of specific MMS functions. Then, it describes the functions of the energy resources scheduler (ERS) implemented in the MMS. The scheduler periodically updates the set points of DERs regulators in order to achieve economic, reliability and power quality objectives, starting form the load and renewable production forecasts and from the results of the system state estimation. The ERS is composed by two main parts, namely: a day-ahead economic scheduler of active power set points during the following day for the minimization of the overall costs, and an intra-day scheduler that every 15 minutes settles the set points of the DERs regulators to optimize the voltage profile at the grid buses, taking into account both technical constraints and the day-ahead economic schedules.},

abstract = {In operational practice power system security analyses are usually conducted with respect to "credible" contingencies, such as almost all N-l contingencies and some N-2 contingencies suggested by operational experience. On the contrary, extreme contingencies are generally not evaluated, although they can be responsible for major system disturbances and seriously jeopardize system security; within an in-depth analysis they should be analyzed. The paper presents an extensive analysis performed on a realistic network representative of the Italian High Voltage (HV) grid by means of a Dynamic Security Assessment (DSA) application tool integrated in a power system simulator. Besides large sets of N-l and N-2 contingencies, the aforementioned analysis includes also severe and extreme contingencies (in particular N-k contingencies at HV system nodes) and it also evaluates the effects of protection malfunctioning on system security. The contingency list has been created by an ad hoc automatic external procedure linked to the power system simulator. Results highlight the importance of the above extensive analyses also in view of risk- based approaches to security evaluation.},
