abstract = {Distributed generation (DG) poses new challenges in distribution network development and operation. Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) will face more active management of networks, new commercial arrangements, and new challenges in asset management. Resolving these will require new types of analysis that were previously unnecessary or very rare. Collecting and processing information to facilitate these analyses presents a significant new burden for DNOs. However, methods are available that may assist DNOs in the collection of information. Three such methods are discussed here: a structured approach to fundamental information requirements; standard formats; and generic device types or category descriptions. Examples are provided of how DNOs would use the information collected to analyse DG connection and operation. Effective management of information will enable DNOs to characterise DG and perform the analyses necessary to ensure that a reliable and high-quality electricity supply is maintained.},

abstract = {This paper presents the analysis carried out for designing and developing a prototype expert system capable of managing the electrical system of an industrial plant. The electric network of the plant, including significant gas turbine and steam turbine generation facilities, is presented. The modeling phase of the system for successive analysis by simulation using a commercial power system code is also reported. The load-shedding problem is then considered and the related engineering aspects are briefly recalled. The guidelines for the realization of a load-shedding scheme for industrial electrical plants based also on advanced artificial intelligence tools such as expert systems are proposed. The expert system is used online to prepare lookup load-shedding tables capable of accounting for actual process conditions. Offline validation of the proposed shedding is then operated by static and/or dynamic simulation. The use of a prototype rule-based expert system is expected to permit the achievement of a better flexibility in the realization of load-shedding schemes for improving the process continuity and management},

Both traditional schemes, based only on frequency thresholds, and adaptive schemes, based on frequency and on its rate of change, are considered. abstract = {The tendency in the industrialized countries to significantly improve the contribution of distributed generation in the existing electrical networks poses new technical and economical challenges to power system control and management. Coordination of distributed resources for the control of active power is addressed in this paper. The models of two typical distributed electrical sources-a photovoltaic array (PV) and a diesel-driven generation plant (DPP)-are first individually derived and examined. Successively these models have been adapted in view of their reciprocal integration into an existing distribution network. A coordinated management of the two distributed sources is suggested in order to fully exploit the PV renewable energy from the Sun. A suitable regulator is derived from secondary control structures typical of large electrical systems by using a power signal exchanged between the two sources. Other possible consequences of this approach are presented with reference to a competitive electric market},
